Year 2

The Year 2 team are class teacher, Mrs Buck and teaching assistants Mrs James and Mrs Cheshire.
We do PE on: Wednesdays and Thursdays
We work hard, learn a lot and have fun. We encourage independence and resilience in our learning. We celebrate our creativity and our uniqueness.
Class Dojo is updated with photos, news and information. Please ensure you check this regularly to keep up with us!
If you wish to contact us using Dojo messages, I am available until 4:30pm Monday to Friday. You can also get in contact by phoning or emailing the school office.
Reading
The most important way to support your child with learning is to read at home with them.
Our Whole Class Reading lessons will develop our reading fluency and will take place daily. We will answer questions about the text to check our understanding and learn new vocabulary. We read all different text types such as stories, picture books, non-fiction, leaflets, poems and song lyrics.
Adults in school will also hear the children read individually.
It is extremely important that you aim to listen to your child read daily at home.
This should be recorded in your child’s Reading Record.
If you need any support with this, please do not hesitate to ask.
School books will be changed on a Tuesday and a Friday.
We have a Class Library where the children may borrow a book to take home for a few days to share with their families. This is a perfect opportunity to discover new books and spend time with each other after a busy day!
The children take turns to bring the Sleepy Sheep Reading Bags with lovely books to share each week. The children choose their books and bring them home on Monday and then return them on the Friday of the same week.
English
Writing
We use Jane Considine’s Write Stuff so that we can learn to be writers.
We will write persuasive letters based on The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Dewalt.
and a story with a message (a fable) based on A Crow’s Tale by Naomi Howarth.
Spelling / Phonics
We continue the learning from Year 1 by following All Aboard Phonics.
Spelling includes daily and weekly spelling activities that are built on the fundamentals of teaching spelling with strong phonetic foundations.
All Aboard Phonics also lessons focus on Grammar, Tricky Words and Comprehension.
Maths
We use White Rose Maths. In the Spring Term we will learn:
- Length and height
- Mass and capacity
- Fractions
We continue to practice skills when working with all four operations in our daily morning maths and in weekly fluency lessons.

Summer Term History Project
This project teaches children about the English and British monarchy from AD 871 to the present day. Using timelines, information about royal palaces, portraits and other historical sources, they build up an understanding of the monarchs and then research six of the most significant sovereigns.
We can make connections across this project with our school Christian values of respect and courage.
Britain had many different kings and queens. Each one showed (or sometimes forgot!) how to respect others.
Different rulers showed courage in different ways.
Courage doesn’t just mean fighting—it means being brave, even when something is scary or hard.
Science: Animal Survival
This project teaches children about the characteristics of animals and the growth in animals by exploring the life cycles of some familiar animals.
They build on learning about the survival of humans by identifying the basic needs of animals for survival, including food, water, air and shelter.
We will use the outdoor area to create habitats to attract wildlife, specifically invertebrates, and we will make observations over the course of the Summer term.
Art: Portraits and Poses
This project teaches children about portraiture. They analyse the portraits of Tudor monarchs and compare Tudor portraits and selfies today.
They use photo editing software to create royal portraits.
We will learn about the courage in the face of adversity shown by Sarah Biffen (1784 – 1850). She was born without arms and with very small legs. Even with these challenges, she learned to read, write, and paint using her mouth!
Design and Technology: Push and Pull
This project teaches children about three types of mechanism: sliders, levers and linkages. They make models of each mechanism before designing and making a greetings card with a moving part.
PE
We do PE on: Wednesdays and Thursdays
This term we will do: athletics and striking and fielding.
After half term, we will do net and wall games and target games.
Please ensure your child wears the correct PE kit for school on PE days, including appropriate footwear to participate. The PE uniform consists of: navy blue t-shirt, plain black or navy blue trousers, leggings or shorts and school sweatshirt / hoody / cardigan.

Summer Term 1:
Christianity – Why do Christians trust Jesus and follow him?
Jesus taught his followers about God’s love and Christians follow in the footsteps of Jesus. They respect Jesus by listening to his word.
Summer term 2:
Judaism – Why is the Torah such a joy for the Jewish community?
The Jewish holy book, the Torah, is respected by the Jewish community as the word of God given to Moses. They are the rules that they follow to be kind and do good deeds.

Outdoor Curriculum
Nature is the greatest classroom, where every leaf, every bird, and every ray of sunshine holds a lesson waiting to be learned.
We will be embracing the outdoor environment and all it has to offer to learn about the plants and trees that live in the school grounds. We will use the SEEK plant ID App to identify a variety of plants.
We aim to build dens and use tools to create our micro-habitats linked to our Science project.
